Hi Kenneth,
      On 4 stroke engines the less back pressure the better. I know of no
way to measure
it. Some two stroke engines benefit from some back pressure and some
newer 4 cycle
engines have "tuned exhaust systems" which further reduce back pressure.
Yes you can unhook
the muffler behind the exhaust pipe and not hurt anything but your ears.
