[ROVERNET - UK] Adventure in Rover land

Hi all,

We everything was going along well with my P4 and then it started loosing
power while driving. It felt like it was starving for fuel so I cleaned the
gas bowl and it seemed to help. I went for a drive and again came the
problem. Mind you this is Saturday and I was planning on going to a car show
on Sunday.

So I decided it must be dirt coming from the tank and decided that I would
put a gas filter after the bowl next to the carburetor. Went for another
drive. No differece! Next I decided that it might be air intake and a
clogged air filter Nope! So I decided it must be the fuel pump. I spent the
better part of 4 hours taking it apart putting back together wrong before I
finally got it to work the way I thought it should. I did find very burnt
points and sanded these it seemed to work well on the bench. I put it in and
for good luck I put in a gallon of gas to prime it.

Well that did it must have been the fuel pump points or so I thought. Sunday
I got the kids loaded and headed off to the show. And guess what it started
the problem all over again after about 5 miles after driving.
It was so bad that I had to pull over a few times and finally limped into a
gas station. I decided to put in some gas while I was deciding what to do
and guess what all my problems went away.

I hate to admit this but I think I spent all day on Saturday working on the
fuel pump thinking I had a problem with it when in fact it was low on gas. I
drove it to the show and took 3rd place in the open class and beat out 1
nice TVR and a Morgan. I am going fix that stupid fuel gauge.

The adventure continues
Dirk

Hey Eric, may i suggest that we somehow keep the 51806 number (maybe
in brackets with "old number"), as I can see clear as the nose on my
face that in a year we'll have this discussion again and the 51806
number will come up, but it won't be in the list and . . .

We hardly need any encouragement towards confusion as it is!

Yours
Vern

I have found that if to talk to the right person at a chain parts store you
can get the correct oil filter. Step one is to ask to talk the manager.
Then ask for the cross reference to a known good filter number. This would
be a Fram PH2821C, AC Delco939 or the WIX triplets. Most stores will not
stock these numbers but they can order them. What they can order may not be

the same brand filter they normally stock or any of the ones we have numbers

for. Next and last, Bring money as you may have to buy a pack of 12 units.
The giveaway is when they tell you that a filter is $122.47. That price is
for the 12 pack. With all these filter choices I may start looking around
for one with just right color to mach the car. Tune next year and hear Eric

say to Ron " what was that P6 filter thing all about?"
