Paul,
  Is that UK or US mpg?

Haven't done any city miles in a P6, years ago I did a run up to
Brisbane in a '67:

Best was about 8l/100km (35 UK mpg)
Worst about 9.5l/100km (29 UK mpg)

SCs can be tuned to run really lean but that may cause long term damage.
I had the mixture dead on according to the lift pin test.

SC had newly lapped valves, rebuilt SU (needle, jet and throttle shaft),
worn chains.  The new throttle shaft bushes make all the difference and
only cost AUS$45 a few years back.  Idle at 500rpm like it's supposed
to.
