In 69 I think they replaced that sleeve.

Same thing happened to me some years ago.  It turned out to be a brass
sleeve on the main shaft in the xmission along which the gears shift to
engage gears on the idler shaft--2nd, 3rd & Rev.  Repair required pulling
and dismantling the xmssion.  A good time to replace the syncro cones!  I
learned at the time that is a relatively common failing of those 4-speed
xmissions.  The brass sleeve is relatively fragine, compared to the steel
gears and shafts.
