Landrover/BMW did something similar, just before they sold out to Ford,
though they did not make a commercial. They shipped my 69 2000TC, and a 59
Rover 100 with a a Rover 75 grille badge I had restored to Couer'D Alene
Resort in Idaho, for the national Landrover Dealer's convention, and put
them in the ballroom, to show Rover, MG, BMW and Austin Mini heritage. (All
marques that BMW owned)This was a strictly private Display, that also had a
1938 and a 1953 BMW. They also had MG's, and one star of the show was the
Paddy Hopkirk Mini. Naturally, they had early Landrovers, and the Camel
Rally Landrovers. Opening night, these were all displayed under spotlights,
in a formal cocktail party atmosphere. The next morning, after the opening
meeting and speeches by Landrover and BMW executives, assuring Landrover
dealers they would always be selling a traditional British product, but with
some German engineering;they were ushered out into the hallway, where the
first new Mini, the new Rover 75, and an MGF had sudedenly appeared. The new
Landrover Discovery was introduced later, on a floating island in the
lake.It was quite an event. I always felt, later, that a Ford spy there,
but will never know. James Dean
