[ROVERNET - UK] Transmission oils

Hi all,

We my son Curtis turns 16 in May and when I was his age my father gave me my
first car to work on before I got my license. Yup you guessed it was a Rover
a 64 SC 2000 to be exact.

So in the spirit of my father instilling a life long Rover love from an
early age I have continued the tradition. So I let my son bid and win on a
3500S that was on EBay and he won it! The car had not been running for the
better part of 20 years so we went through some basics this pat week end.
Cleaning, oil and filter change cleaning of gas lines etc. and low and
behold we were able to get it running with a condenser change and starter
fluid. However it appears that we will have disassemble and clean or even
rebuild the carbs. But otherwise a pretty rust free original car.

I have to say I was proud of how hard he worked and how mechanical he is
becoming.

Now to the question, we want to change the transmission fluid and there has
been a lot of discussion on the net as to what the best fluid to use, but
for the life of me I can't find those posts. So suggestions would be
appreciated along with any first car stories or advice for my son. (I told
him that pretty soon he will have to asking his own questions) As a side
note my 7 year old has staked a claim to a TC 2000 and is picking out colors
he wants to paint it.

Hope all is well
Dirk

Anyone out there know of a Series 2 SD1 for sale? I know a few 1982's
were imported into Canada - i haven't heard of any in the US. There is
one for sale in the Toronto Area Rover Club website, but the owner Bill
Osmond has changed his e-mail address. I heard from a Canadian friend
of a Series 2 2000 in Montreal some years ago.It was brought in to be
in a movie, but then I heard that they had to export again as it was
non conforming.

185 are fine.
I use them on the SC with standard top links.
Inflate front to 33psi to keep steering light enough.

Thanks Eric and listers for your earlier input on posting difficulties.

With regard to my recent duplicated emails, I did a Google search. Most
entries were those of people selling software programs to fix the problem.

Further on in my search though,I found a reference to an article on the
subject by Pamela Y. C. Fong of the California Institute of Technology,
'Outlook XP Downloads Duplicate POP3 Messages'. Pamela suggests increasing
the server timeout to 10 minutes.

I've implemented that and all seems fine now.

As I have noted others to have this problem from time to time, I hope that
this may be of help.

Kind regards

Hi Kent,
I took a look through woolies yesterday and could not find "easy off
blue". Oven cleaners were pretty much all in pressure packs. Most
contained significant amounts of NaOH. One claimed to be "non-caustic",
however the back warned of strong alkaline salts. Since when are strong
alkaline salts "non-caustic"? Other cleaners for stovetops were citrus
based but warned against used with aluminium. In the "easy off" line
woolies stocked "bam" and "degreaser", the later cautioning used with
aluminium. Got me confused, so I haven't bought/tried anything yet.

The V8 upper cylinder kit I bought comes with silvered tin head gaskets.
Why should I remove the silver coating? It also came with gaskets for
both SU and Stromberg carburettors. Having played with both I'm
struggling to see where I use some of it. The kit contains little round
rubber washers, o-rings, copper compression rings. No idea where the
latter would go. Didn't come with any exhaust manifold gaskets, though
I kept asking the shop about those, will have to get them separately.

Lastly I finally got the EGR valve out. It wasn't connected and just
got in the way. Now have a suitable replacement bolt.

Dermot

You might check with Alvin Castle (Top Dog Rover, as he calls himself).
Alvin has many SD1 Rovers in various states at his house in Los Angeles and
seems to know quite a bit about the model. I have no idea if he has a
Series 2, however. His email is:
RockStar30cars at aol.com Alvin is a bit difficult to contact at times. If
you have problems let me know and I will forward his cell phone number to
you under 'separate cover'.

Hi Gavin,
Almost anything strong enough to soften carbon will damage aluminium. I
noted that there is a caution on this pressure pack also against use on
aluminium, but I have never had problems with this product. I also
haven't let it sit for more than half an hour without flushing and
reapplying. The only contents I could find said "contains
monoethanolamine." I would hesitate to use anything that is not an
identical product so we better just say forget it. Sorry for the time
wasted.

Roverly,
Kent K.

Hi Kent,
All is not lost. MEA is a commonly used cleaner. This website gives
a fascinating look into what is in products as well as which brands are
held by a company.

http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/household/brands?tbl=chem&i
d=144

Could you take a look at this oven cleaner line up on choice, and see if
that's the product you used? :)

http://www.choice.com.au/viewarticleasonepage.aspx?id=103668&catId=10044
7&tid=100008&p=1

The whole article on oven cleaners makes an interesting read.
