[ROVERNET - UK] Restoration, Ali and Kent

Hi All,

It is funny how things go full circle in life. When I was 17 and had my
second P6 I loved the car but hated the bumpers so I worked racking leaves
so I could get the money to buy Volvo aluminum bumpers. I thought these
looked real cool and began retrofitting these to my series 2 P6 shock mounts
and all. I never finished the project and still have the car and the
bumpers.

Now I really like the vintage original bumpers and would never think of
changing them. I guess that is the difference in owning a vintage car and a
"cool" car when you are a kid.

Hey now that I got myself excited here maybe I will put those Volvo bumpers
on this weekend......

Ali, I was looking at the weekend photos of your P6 rust and it seems pretty
bad. I think I could dig up a base unit for you that has far less rust and
would be willing to give it to you. I may be also breaking a car and
scraping the shell maybe I could cut a section out for you to replace an
entire rust area. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Kent, Glad you are back! I missed your comments on the net it is like going
to online Rover school. Class dismissed!

Dirk

This is an interesting discussion. I think I'm going to sit on the fence
with this one. I like originality but sometimes it's harder to keep it
original then it is to improve. Would a jag be better off on a crusher or
with a Chevy v8 in it?

I restored my US spec Mercedes Benz 6.9 and put the Euro bumpers because I
hate the look of those huge bull bars. Every now and then, I get an urge to
see if I can find an Aluminum Chevy 350 engine and drop it into my P6.

Go for it. Just plan on changing the rear end, too....maybe one of
those Corvette transaxles.

I always put home market bumpers on my SD1's and use square headlamps.
NAS spec SD1's need all the help they can get in the cosmetics
department. I even fitted a Volvo rear bumper to my first one.

Roverly,
Kent K.

I agree, the SD1 is quite an attractive car but the US ones got beaten with
an ugly stick. When I lived in London, there was a guy with a bright yellow
SD1 with a huge wide body kit (335 tires in the rear) and a Batman sign. It
looked pretty awesome.

That sounds like a whole world away from nicely restored P5s .This whole
Rover thing is turning out a pretty broad church!(so to speak.) Yours

(unless I give up on this infernal
wiring harness.)

Either P5B coupes were Vastly different to other Rovers (I haven't owned
one, had P4 and P6), or Kent fails to see the consistency.

Thanks to Kent's visit, we managed to renew acquaintances with some of the
Northwest Rover "Group" and met a few more of the folks on this network. A
great bunch. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Kent & Sheila again.

Thanks again Kent for the inspection of the P-5 and your words of
encouragement. I may try to start the engine again, soon! I still have the
upcoming Portland ABFM to get the MG's ready for though.

P.S. Kent, the weather has turned a little cooler and may even get a shower
on Sunday.

All-
The Portland All British Field Meet is coming soon and I hope this reminder
might
Influence a few folks to come out and join me in the relatively lonely Rover
display area.
The event is at Portland International Raceway, from September 1 through
September 4.
However, Saturday the 2nd is the main day for display of cars, as Sunday is
the swap
meet day. There is vintage racing all four days.

I would surely love to see you folks from Washington and British Columbia
make it
down this year. It is always over our Labor Day weekend holiday. Although
you Canadians
don't have the three day holiday weekend like we do, Saturday is the main
day for display
of cars and Sunday is simply a swap meet. As a result, many people from
outside the area simply arrive on Saturday mid morning, then leave Saturday
night or Sunday morning to make it home.

Last year I took several pictures, including those of the three Rovers: My
1969 TC,
another local P6 (both his and mine happen to be April Yellow, but mine is
on the right), and of a local SD1. If you are interested, here are some of
the pictures (there are 5 pages of thumbnails that you can click on for a
larger view, or you can run a slideshow):

http://www.towermonkey.com/nordlund/2005ABFM/

If you are interested in attending the event this year, you might check
their web page for details and the entry form. If you submit your entry
before
August 15th, you can e-mail them a photo of your car, to be included in the
nicely printed event program:

I think Kent is referring to the conversion of a RHD wiring harness to the
Left hand side. Not something I would want to take on.

In reply to Glens comment. I am aware of two P5B coupes that have sold this
year around the A$20,000 mark. One was at auction that still required
addition work to bring IT back to original condition.
