[ROVERNET - UK] RE: rovernet Digest, Vol 42, Issue 37

Hi all,

Well to set the record straight I do not have a SD1 yet nor an 827. I would
like to have both and will eventually. I have to avoid becoming Kent of the
East as it sounds like he has got the West covered. So am I setting a goal
to keep it under 200 cars!

As far as my fleet is concerned all will be revealed next year at the Rover
meet and all will be my guest to drive the ones that work.

I did end up buying that P5 Mk 111 on eBay awhile back and it looked real
tempting to put a 3500 engine in it. But I have decided to stay true to the
car and put the proper engine back in it.

By the way Kent I need a 4 speed manual with over drive transmission got
one?

Here is a stupid question. The transmission on my P5 saloon is the older
type DG with the Reverse at the bottom stalk the Trans seems to drive and
shift fine but there is NO park it just seems to go into neutral when I
place it there. Could this be an adjustment or something worse?

Cars I want!

Marauder (now this would be cool I guess there is one in Iowa)

Estate (there are more of these left hand drive then you think)

SD1 Vitesse twin plenum (one with the cool spoiler in the front)

827SLI (the green metallic one I almost bought new in 91)

Cyclops (got excited for awhile when that 51 popped up on eBay)

Jet1 (I think Kent has one)

P5B coupe (Kent you have been chosen to help me convert one to LHD)

P6 convertible (a Graber)

And a million dollars (I know no one in this group has this)

Dirk

Hi Bill

all the P5's & P5B's were also made LHD.
Those were called "continental specifications", for Europe or "export ", for

the US, but only with automatic gearbox with the V8 engine.
LHD are now hard to find in Europe or in the US, due to a poor succes of the

sales in the 60's and a "natural selection".

Marc and Roger,
I am converting my P5B Coupe to LHD and can detail the
process for anyone who is interested. Converting to
manual trans is also possible using the LT77 or RT380 and
an SD1 bellhousing, six cylinder pedal assembly and clutch
master. The process is easier if you have a LHD Mk. III
parts car to rob. The worst part is the wiring harness
and the MK. III is no help there. I may give up and order
a LHD harness from Wadhams. Wiring can be simplified if
you substitute a voltmeter for the ammeter in the
instrument pod. The Dutch and the Swedes seem to have
gotten most of the LHD P5B Coupes. Differences include:
dash wood, column shroud, column drop, front drop down
armrest(should mount on the other front seat), emergency
brake assembly, power steering box and idler, PS high
pressure hose and front passenger footrest (need a right
hand side instead of left) under the carpet in the
footwell, brake line from master to servo. There are
issues with the screen wipers, but I haven't gotten that
far.

Roverly,
Kent K.

Hi Netters,
I had a surprise visit this morning from Nick Hand. Nick is a Jaguar
man from Oklahoma who has just purchased a pretty nice SD1 in Oregon.
He was hoping to drive it home but there were clutch issues, so he
rented a car and drove home via California, Phoenix, Midland and
Sterling City, TX. Nick moved to the US from the UK in 1979 and had a
P6 while in the UK. He has an E-Type, a pair of S-Types and lots of Jag
junk. A really great guy. I'm looking forward to helping him with his SD1.

Roverly,
Kent K.

I beg to differ guys. I haven't seen Dirk actually post an inventory,
but he doesn't collect junk like I do.
I would be much better off if I wasn't a sucker for any Rover within 500
miles. If you are looking for a project, you can have anything I've got
except the P5B Coupe...and maybe the P6B. Nothing I've got is really
pretty.

Kent K.

I'm with Kent here -- there are many more Rovers in the US than one
would think. A lot of them need work though, and they are spread
somewhat thin across a large country.

I find that the best Rovers present themselves when I have no garage
space or just after I have spent a lot of money on body work on a Rover
that's already in the garage.

Al, what type of Rover would you like? I'll bet among the Rovernet and
RSTCA network you could find at least a good project car from each major
model range from P2 to 800/Sterling. Probably several from each range
except P2 and P3. Between Dad and me, we have a bit of an inventory
problem too. Probably at least one each P4, P5 and P6 should be
considered surplus from our fleet.

Speaking of surplus, maybe we should start a thread about Rover *parts*
in the US...

Steve

I have my share of Rover's and my share of cars. Now that I have a P6 i
think that if buy another Rover, it would be a P5B or a Vettesse once they
hit 25 years old. I wouldnt touch a Rover 800 (sterling) with a 10 ft barge
pole (no offense to Sterling owners on the list). A friend owned an 820E
back home and it gave him nightmares.

Regards

Al

I have a soft spot for the 827SLI. Any Rover nut that
lives in Sterling City should have a Sterling. Or if you
really like oddballs, there's the diesel (825SD?). I've
only seen pictures. One of the New Zealand dealers has a
75 V8 listed (NZ$77,000), but I won't live long enough for
it to become "antique." As far as I know, Ron Jones is
still lurking around somewhere in San Antonio with his
glass roof P6B and Rovers West was trying to get their act
together a few months ago. I think they still have the
very rusty P6 Estate. Two years ago there was a very nice
Cyclops for sale in Kentucky and there's a RHD 80 that
keeps popping up in Tuscon. There are definitely some
nice Rovers out there.

Roverwishfully,
Kent K.
