Hey all,
Just because I'm feeling rather lazy and don't have the time to spend
grinding one down right before xmas, I don't suppose anyone over in the
States has a plug spanner that will fit the NADA bore holes?
My 70 P6B just arrived over from GA the other day, and I'm trying to get her
started - so changing the plugs is a good start. Adding fuel would be
another. The fuel pump seems to be clicking away rather happily, but no fuel
is appearing at the engine end - so that will be part two after I pour some
fuel directly into the carb bowls just to see if she'll fire..

I had the same problem and found that the el cheapo "crushed thin tube
"plug wrench from my lawn mower worked. It looks much like the Special Rover
plug Spanner which came with the P6 tool roll I found in the UK .
You may find the carb float valves are stuck open and all your gas is
flowing nicely through the over flow/vent pipes into the charcoal canisters
. If so it will eventually end up in a puddle under the car , prompting a
where the 123456 did that come from? Reaction .

self tapping screws that attach the running boards.
I assume I should replace the entire strip between the wheel wells.
For those of you whose cars have gone through similar surgery, were you able
to replace the bottom only, or did you have to replace the side of the inner
sill as well (facing the running board).
How much did the sill repair cost?

In each of my two cases, I had the car towed to an industrial sandblaster where he sprayed that area and I found that the rust had crept upwards. I cut out the old metal with an angle grinder and welded in new metal.
Although you can by preformed sections from the UK, they will likely have to be cut in half for shipping.
Your best best is to have someone locally use a large metal bender (brake?)and make up the long pieces. You can trim those pieces to fit and weld them or have them welded in place.
Could be a couple of thousand dollars for both sides if you pay a professional.

It is very probable that the faces of the inner sill have some rot as
well as the bottom as moisture gets trapped inside the sill and rots
it from the inside. Try tapping along the inner sill on its outer
face and also inside the door openings with a hammer and listen
carefully. If you get a solid "thunk" then the area is sound, if you
get a tinny sound, crumbling noises or go through then you have a
problem.
Probably the best repair method is to replace the whole section - you
can source sill repair panels from JR Wadhams <www.jrwadhams.co.uk>
and these are close copies of the original pressings. If the worm is
in the inner face as well they also supply repair sections for the
sides of the base unit along with replacement jacking tubes.

The one I have has a crack in the casting, so unfortunately is no good as a core, for a change over one from Scott (in Melbourne). The car is in Adelaide, Australia, so one from Australia, or New Zealand is what I am trying to locate. The car is Right Hand drive, so the part number is 545908.

Hi Rover Netters. Yesterday (Tues, Dec 9), while driving in the dark in the
rain, my turn signals and wipers stopped working - at the same time. The
wipers stopped at the same time as I moved the turn signal stalk down in
preparation for a right hand turn.
At the time I was running with headlights and rear lights on and had the
heater blower on full. The engine still ran, and the front side and head
lights, horn, interior lights and head light flasher all work. I couldn't
see if the rear lights were on.
I was two blocks from home when this happened and had just picked up the P6
after an 8 week stay in a Brit car garage where the operator was getting to
the bottom of leaks in the tranny that they'd rebuilt ealrier this year.
The car is a LHD 1968 P6 SC automatic; retro-fit alternator not generator.
Don't get side tracked by the tranny work because I don't believe the turn
signals and wipers stopping are related to it. I had driven the car for 30
miles (from garage to home) when this happened.
I was so disgusted that this happened that I parked the car in the car port
and don't plan on looking into the problem until Saturday.
By the way, as I have a spare steering wheel complete with turn
signal/horn/headlamp flasher box I do plan on taking it apart "for practice"
in case the problem in the car is 'in there' - which it might be since

Joe " Prince of Darkness " Lucas electrical failures on a dark , cold ,wet
night ?Sounds familiar .
I would try the easy things first before assuming the failure of wipers and
flashers are interconnected . Do the 4 way flashers work ?, if so the
flasher bulbs and much of the wiring is OK You only need to fiddle around
the switch and wiring on the steering column and flasher unit .
My P6b flasher is very sensitive to battery voltage , your battery may have
been depleted ?
When did you last look at the fuses ?? 50 year old fuses and their holders
can be problematical . Clean all the connections , check all the fuses are
OK . Try replacing the wiper and flasher fuses with two new ones.
Lucas Wiper motors can get hot and cranky when operated for extended
periods. Yours might just work when it has cooled down . If it won't work
when cold , check to be sure there is power at the motor terminals with the
wiper switch in both positions h . If the power is OK then remove the wiper
motor, strip and clean the commutator . Clean out all the grease in the gear
box and repack it . Try the motor before refitting it
Try all the above before starting to rip out the wiring harness

1. Lucas wires and components have never let me down.
2. It depends on the model as to which fuse to check. There is not a
common fuse for indicators and wipers, so it is a bit strange. Anyway check
all fuses.
3. If a fuse is blown then suspect a short, possibly where wiring goes
through perished grommets, possibly in wiper motor.
4. Yes check that you have voltage at the motor connections.
5. If you have voltage, then strip & clean & relube wiper motor.

Hi, Walter. I have a similar car and had a similar problem. I ended up
studying the wiring diagram extremely carefully, removing the steering wheel
and glove boxes, releasing the strip dash containing the switches,
renumbering the contacts on the ignition switch and following all the leads
using a multimeter, and eventually have the circuits analysed and
correct......what a job!! But try it. I could mail you a spare wiring
diagram if you need it. All the push connections in the ancient wiring, of
course, had to be checked and lubricated with conducting grease.......good

Hi Eric,
Yes, I actually got a bounce message so was a little surprised when it appeared a few minutes ago. I had unsubscribed from my home addresses to reduce the amount I was downloading at home but have been keeping a bit of a watching brief when at work. When I tried to post I forgot I was logged in using my 'work' address, which is not subscribed, when I should have used my devlins at bp.com address which is still receiving the list.
I have no P5 or P6 at the moment and am spending all my spare time working with my older Rovers but I still like to read the goings-on on your excellent group.

Hi All,
That sounds like a vacuum leak. Check all the little hoses
under the bonnet and there may well be some under the dash. Good place to start.
If its not a vacuum leak at least you have eliminated it.

Hi all. Saturday came, and with the help of emailed input and phoned
suggestions, the turn signals and wiper problems have been solved. I
replaced all the fuses and cleaned all the contacts and plugs at the fuse
box. For good measure I also replaced the ground cable at the battery and
cleaned up the positive battery clamp and cable end. As soon as I turned on
the ignition, the wipers moved back to their park position (they'd stopped
part way up the windshield).
Thanks for all your help and support. It's comforting to know that there is
such a great resource out there for Rover cars.
I like my Rover again!

Seriously, though, I found rolls of cork available at NAPA to do the same thing......lots of savable waste from the centre cut-out.

Is it the steering idler damper box which you need? Right hand drive or left hand drive? Reconditioned right had drive steering idler boxes are available from scotts old auto rubber in Melbourne. I do not know if he can recondition and return left hand drive boxes, if you have a good core. If you just need the arm I may have a spare one come February, when I get to Australia (currently in upstate NY).

and I don't know how good they may be?? You might try Garrett Bourgue in
Maine he has a complete P6B (less eng-trans) for sale $300 claims it is a
rust free body. He has lots of parts and may be able to help. He is a little

I am in New Zealand I have been on the net for a number of years
We have 2 1946 Rover 10Hps to restore;1 1049 P3 75 which I hope to have
on the Road b4 middle next year; 60,80;95 & 110 P4 the 80 will be the
next project; 3xP6B S & a 1968 wire wheeled 2000 TC; at 3ltr Saloon &
coupe ; 827 Coupe ; 2.5 75 connoisseur & we have just bought a 97 Range
Rover
this is a 30year long obsession
My retirement if it ever come is going to be very busy

Hi All, Hope everyone had a good Christmas!
I have just taken a look at my steering box on my LHD NADA 2000TC. I thought I could get away with just replacing the seals as I have a nasty leak. However when I jacked up the front of the car and checked the output spindle I noticed that I had some play there. So my questions are these:
[1] Has anyone had a go at replacing the bottom bushing? I have access to a full machine shop and I'm not a bad machinist.
[2] the dismantling and so on would I have to source new shims to rebuild the box too?
[3] Does anyone know of a good place to mine rebuilt or may have a replacment unit?
Best Christmas present for me this year was a whole two days to tinker on the Rover without being asked to put up shelves!

No. The bushings should be straightforward (there are 3 of them), the
nasty bit is the worm has integral ball races, they are usually worn
badly if the bushing is sloppy so you'll have quite a task to
refurbish those.

These things dont have bushes, the alloy casing is used as the busings
and they wear !
I machined the alloy casing out, press fitted phospor bronze bushings
and new seals, not the easiest job to complete. The housing needs to be
filled with a heavy oil for the damping, engine oil is too light and
wont damp successfully. It was 15 years ago I did mine and I think I
used Diff oil after trying engine oil and gearbox oil, none of which
worked. There may be a special shock absorber oil that could be used,
unfortunatly the factory gave no specs on which oil was used as the
whole unit was intended to be replaced, never repaired .

Opps, yes it is the steering box, sorry.
Still the steering box is a challenge too, having done the busings once
on a 2000TC I dont want to do it again.
See if you can find a good condition old box.
