Hello Netters,

Has any member explored the wide range of disk rotors on the market to see
if there are cheaper alternatives to Rover-specific items?

My daily driver's disks have worn down and the secondhand spare set proved
to be too thin for skimming, so I am shopping around for a similar less
costly set that might for example just need a little bit of machining to
make it fit.

Responses would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Hi Group,

Something funny is happening with my recently rebuilt French Motorola
alternator. I think the voltage regulator is acting up - one minute
there is about 12 volts at the battery terminals, then it jumps up to
14.
All this at a fast idle.
My turn signal flasher doesn't want to work at 12 volts!
Kent, I think you mentioned recently that you knew of a drop in
replacement? I hate messing around with pulley alignement and Mickey
Mouse brackets!

IIRC the P76 Formula 5000 was racing around this time also.

During 1974-5 Repco which was once Australia's biggest automotive parts manufacturer got together with Phil Irving (designer and builder of the Repco-Brabham race engine, also of Vincent motorcycle fame) to build a Formula 5000 race engine based on the P76 V8. The Leyland P76, a big four door Aussie saloon developed and launched by Leyland Australia in 1973, used a long stroke version of the 3.5 Rover V8 that was slightly taller than the Rover block and used a Chevy style rocker gear arrangement with oiling via hollow pushrods.

A Repco developed racing version of the Leyland engine was fitted to the McLaren M23 of Gold Star champion John McCormack. Initial output was 390 hp (vs 192 hp for stock P76); fuel injection, dry sump lubrication and Lorimer ignition were fitted. Later development was carried out independently, after Repco Engine Development Company closed down, and to address this relative lack of power against other competing race engines (Chev, Holden), new heads were designed by Phil Irving and cast from a special 'hypereutetic' alloy from Comalco. "Comalco were working towards eliminating valve guides and seats, and thus these heads had none. The design also featured a 'bent' pushrod, with a shuttle running in a bush in the head between two short pushrods to allow more room for straight inlet ports."

This left the P76 block as the only production-sourced component, as this was a requirement within Formula 5000 rules. Power increased to 420 hp and 420 ft/lbs of torque - this latter figure was sensational, being about 40 higher than the Repco-Holdens, renowned for their mid-range. An alternate cam returned 470 hp and 380 ft/lbs.

Unfortunately, additional stresses imposed by these new big port, big valve heads then overstressed the package to the point of regular failure via a cracked block. Many retirements ensued until the project was eventually dropped after a few hard years and McCormack reverted back to the reliable Repco-Holden 5000.

I had heard at least one of these P76 engines went to New Zealand to be used in power boat racing and another to the US for sports car racing. I wonder if they're still around?

Rob

It could be that the brushes are just wearing themselves in against the
rotor. I would
let things ride for a bit and see if the problem goes away. It shouldn't
take long. Also, make sure your connections are tight.

The next alternative would be to take the piece back to the rebuilder and
ask him to try again. I had my French Motorola rebuilt about 6 months ago
with no probs.

Having recently swept the cobwebs from the alternator portion of my
memory banks, I will give it a shot. The substitute is a Delco three
wire with integral voltage regulator. The one to ask for would be a '73
Chevy 350 with air conditioning (63 amp) or something like that. If it
is not clocked right for your application you can remove the long
through-the-case bolts and change the clocking.

Lance La Certe asked about a Delco for his P6B and I had done one years
ago but the details were fuzzy. Turns out the P6B needs to mount the
alternator above the bracket and closer to the head because of the
arrangement of the water pump pulley. For the P6B you will need a
bracket from a 1964 to late seventies Buick small block V6 or V8 (Not a
215 as they have the alternator in a completely different spot). These
brackets usually mount the A6 type A/C compressor also, but you can cut
that part of the bracket off. Non-A/C equipped Buicks were sorta rare,
but they were produced. Later V6 brackets were welded steel instead of
cast aluminum and most also mounted the R4 type compressor (as is found
on the SD1) but in a different position on the engine.

For SD1 you can use the stock bracket and mount the Delco in the stock
location, but you will need to drill the bracket holes out to fit the GM
size pivot bolt. A spacer (copper or brass tubing is good) must be added
to the pivot bolt behind the alternator pivot boss to hold the
alternator forward on the bracket. An aftermarket adjusting strap (speed
shop part) will be needed and must be bent to match the front face of
the ear on the alternator that mounts the adjusting bolt. Most of these
straps will foul the alternator fan and you will have to do some
grinding on the strap for fan clearance. The only other item needed is a
two groove pulley for the alternator since the single groove pulley with
which the alternator is usually supplied does not protrude far enough to
match the water pump pulley and crank pulley. I run this setup on my TR8
and the wiring is a little different from the SD1 though the pulleys and
brackets are equivalent (belts are different because TR8 has a larger
diameter water pump pulley). The ring terminal on the back of the Delco
goes to the heavy gauge wire from the Motorola ( brown). The small brown
wire goes to terminal 2 on the Delco and the brown/yellow wire goes to
terminal 1 on the Delco. Hope those colors are right for SD1. I don't
have a wiring diagram in front of me.

Roverly,
Kent K.

Does any one have a number for a fuel pump for the 3500s. I seem to remember a long time ago that you could get one from Napa, US stores,
I think it was ?Facel? but I am not sure.
Any help would appreciated.

Hi Barry,

The 3500S (Federal cars only) had a fuel pump that looks like one of the
Facet pumps:

http://www.facet-purolator.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=7&id=14&Itemid=36

It comes in at least three pressure / flow capacities -- I'm not sure
which would be the best match for the 3500S:

Barry,

If you can come up with a specification for fuel flow and pressure, I can probably give you an SU pump number that will work. I HATE Facet pump as they run continuously. I had one on an MGB tourer for a short while and it drove me bats. I converted it bad to the original SU configuration. The only way that I would install a facet, would be as a backup pump in series with the SU.

I think it is Faucet but any low pressure in line pump should do the trick.

The pump in my 3500s is an original and It is a BENDIX ...I am quite sure it runs at 7lbs (quite high compared to others).
However I am 100% sure this pump is also used in small aircraft (often piper and cub etc..) and your local flying club would either have one they could sell you or be able to bring one in for you...

Hi Guy's
Thanks to everyone on the Facet fuel pump. Like Ben and Slats I
was thinking along the same lines and use the good ole SU. I have a few from
my P5 days and am sure I could get one going to use. Could even put it in
the trunk out of the weather.
This is for a young friend f mine who I am glad to say is smitten with
Rovers, it's so good to get some young blood interested in Rovers.
He has a 1958 series 1 land Rover that he drives almost ever day. Under my
guidance he has bought a 1970 3500s. Some one has fitted a some thing or
other 4 barrel carb and some after market fuel pump that's pumping gas every
where even with a regulator fitted, so he wants go back to SUs (thank
goodness) and a suitable pump. I think the SU will be the cheapest and best
way to go.

Thanks again to every body

Barry

Thanks Dennis, Now that you mention Bendix, that was the name I was tying to
think of. A friend who lives local has just emailed to say he thinks he has
a pump for a 3500s, so if that fails we can try the airport

Many thanks

Apparently Facet is the current incarnation of Bendix:

http://www.purolator-facet.com/profile2.htm

"1976 Facet Enterprises, Inc. separated from Bendix Corporation.
Facet is a "spin-off" of three Fram Divisions and four Bendix
Divisions. Facet Enterprises appears on NYSE. Corporate headquarters
located in Tulsa, OK"

  Garrett,
I decided to sell my Rover.I have replaced everything under the hood
including a all new air conditioning system, new engine, etc. I went over
my bills and I have over $35,000.00 invested. It still needs paint and
interior. Since my operation, I have lost interest in the car. I would like
to get $12,500.00. If you have any buyers, let me know. The car runs great.

 Hello Martin,
I am doing just fine. It has been a really nice summer here! I think I
have one of those knobs. I will check in the morning for you.
Thanks,

 Hello Martin,
That is GREAT that you have your car up and running again! I am happy
that the systems that you have worked alot on have come out to your
liking..but as we know, there is a well known saying. It is never over in a
Rover!
As far as the radiator upgrade goes, that will be a big improvement I
bet. The original radiator is also cooling the transmission fluid. The air
conditioning condensor is right in front of it as well. If the radiator is
not large enough to keep the car cool, than that will have bad effects on
the engine and trans. over time. An aluminum radiator of a similar size to
the original should be more efficient at shedding heat.
I would be happy to have your radiator, and your dash pad on hand here.
I have found that a good source of odd shaped boxes for shipping is a body
shop that works on newer car's accidents. The body parts furnished to them
have loads of packing material around them. I would be happy to cover the
shipping and offer you parts credit amount for them if you wish.
Unfortunately, I do not have a heater fan motor. I will call and ask a few
people for you.
Enjoy your car!!
Garrett

and the rebuilt power stearing box came out great. I feal that the car is
running a little hotter than I like. and the heater blower fan is making
noise. I am replacing the radiator with a Chev aluminum radiator that is the
same size. If you want, I can send you the old radiator. It has been record.
I still have the dash board for you, but I can't find a box.
If you have one, I need a heater blower fan motor. Let me know.
Marty

What a shame that the owner has to sell such a nice car. Sounds like a
sad story here chaps.

Barry and Lance,

I have been talking to a couple of MOSS distributors, that also run Brit car repair shops, on this subject. They are seeing as high as a 20% failure rate on the new Burlen pumps. I purchased one of the Burlen conversion kits, but have not yet installed it. It uses a Hall Effect transistor and a magnetic device that attached to the diaphragm. It also has a small metal arm that attaches to the diaphragm assembly and this is used to fine tune the pump. You tune for the highest cycles per minute setting. I believe that the failure rate is probably due to?movement of the tuning arm in shipping.

You can also pick up a used pump and have it rebuilt by Dave BuBois (google SU fuel pumps). He is located in Bremerton, WA and rebuilds them as new and uses an optical triggered,?solid state system. I have spent two days with Dave, understudying his sytem and will be rebuilding pumps also,. very shortly. Dave only does this process from October thru May. I will be primarily picking up the summer load and supporting our local Portland, OR clubs. Dave's system is very well described on his web site. I believe it to be very well thought out and engineered.

If you are going to have one rebuilt, you do want to ensure that you select one with a high enough capacity for the engine. I believe that you said a 3500 cc engine. An MGB pump ( AZX 1300 or AUX 300 series) for example puts out about 2.7 -3.5 psi and up to 15 gallons per hour. There are also double ended pumps, configured to either have both ends pump together or separately, where one side is used as a reserve fuel supply. These are AZX 1400 (together) or AZX 1500 (separately).

Many thanks for your input Lance. We will be going to an SU pump

Barry

I strongly second the idea of an SU pump. ?I fought with Facet replacements
that were not only annoying because they were always on, but often did not
provide enough pressure.
SUs are easily available online. ?I do not have the part number at hand BUT
I would make sure you that you DO NOT buy the 'original' SU pump with
points. ?They tend to burn out rather easily. ?SU makes a 'pointless' pump
which looks identical and works flawlessly.

The fuel system on a P6B uses a recirculatory arrangement in which the
pump delivers a considerably larger volume of fuel than the engine
needs. The surplus is returned to the tank. So the pump must and does
run all the time. Is an SU a good choice for this? Rover must have
have had a good reason for going with a Bendix pump, as they had used
SUs on all their earlier models...

Just another thought to add to the mix!

Cheers,

  Bill D.

I believe that the failure rate is probably due to movement of the tuning arm in shipping.

He is located in Bremerton, WA and rebuilds them as new and uses an optical triggered, solid state system.

Hi Netters,
Stumbled across some pics of the Rover cylinder heads being developed by
TA Performance. Pics are dated November of '09 and I don't know what
progress has been made since then. I think the design is based on their
V6 Buick street head. I drooled all over the front of my shirt...on
second thought, maybe that's just senility setting in. Anyway, if you
want to see the pics, email me direct.

Just had another rejected message by the?Rovernet Server?
THe message size had been preset at 40Kb. That`s usually enough for all Plain
Text messages the list.

However, If a person does not change their format settings on a Rovernet
message?to Plain Next, problems begin.

The preset settings allows for people with telephone dial-up to get a ?message
and permits prople with Smart Phones to do the same.
However if a message is set as `Rich Text:or HTML``.Then your computer takes
your message in plain text and adds HTML commands to create text colour, text
bold face, a variety of font shapes and size, and all the other pretty things.
The increase the message as all the brackets and command have to be included
along with the ogininal message, So, a simple message which could easily be
under 40 Kb balloons to:
 ? Size: 2231 bytes? ?

The message isususally directed ti `discard`.? I would be?so much more
convenient if members woulf check the message formation before sending or use
another program for? hte internert withm the format preset.

Hi Kent

I understand Triumph Rover Spares here in Adelaide put a lot of money into them commissioning TA to develop a first batch of 100 heads. They use 1.9 inlets as standard but can be fitted up to 2.02 for racing where it's reported they'll be good for 600bhp. I think they flow something like 230cfm. Ian Wilson, TRS proprietor, now has them in his 5.0 litre racing TVR Tuscan and he says they easily outperform the Wildcats that he formerly ran. In fact he says the lightweight TVR accelerates like nothing he has ever driven before. There's also a set being tested in a racing MGB somewhere in Oz. Nice design, but oh so costly. At AU$8000 a pair, which is what TRS are offering them for, I doubt they'll sell too many for street use. Shame, as it was hoped they would provide a viable cost effective alternative to the Wildcats. Can't imagine TA would be asking that much in the US market.

I think there may be a photo on the TRS site. Anyone know if TA are actually selling them to the public yet?

Best regards
Rob

  Garrett,
I decided to sell my Rover.I have replaced everything under the hood including a all new air conditioning system, new engine, etc. I went over my bills and I have over $35,000.00 invested. It still needs paint and interior. Since my operation, I have lost interest in the car. I would like to get $12,500.00. If you have any buyers, let me know. The car runs great.

I am doing just fine. It has been a really nice summer here! I think I have one of those knobs. I will check in the morning for you.

 Hello Martin,
That is GREAT that you have your car up and running again! I am happy that the systems that you have worked alot on have come out to your liking..but as we know, there is a well known saying. It is never over in a Rover!
As far as the radiator upgrade goes, that will be a big improvement I bet. The original radiator is also cooling the transmission fluid. The air conditioning condensor is right in front of it as well. If the radiator is not large enough to keep the car cool, than that will have bad effects on the engine and trans. over time. An aluminum radiator of a similar size to the original should be more efficient at shedding heat.
I would be happy to have your radiator, and your dash pad on hand here.
I have found that a good source of odd shaped boxes for shipping is a body shop that works on newer car's accidents. The body parts furnished to them have loads of packing material around them. I would be happy to cover the shipping and offer you parts credit amount for them if you wish.
Unfortunately, I do not have a heater fan motor. I will call and ask a few people for you.
Enjoy your car!!
Garrett

  Garret,
I finally got my car back after 4 months in the shop. The new engine, A/C, and the rebuilt power stearing box came out great. I feal that the car is running a little hotter than I like. and the heater blower fan is making noise. I am replacing the radiator with a Chev aluminum radiator that is the same size. If you want, I can send you the old radiator. It has been record.
I still have the dash board for you, but I can't find a box.
If you have one, I need a heater blower fan motor. Let me know.

Hi Netters,
Mike T. at TA Performance advises that the new heads will be in
production around the first of the year, but it looks like they won't be
cheap. They do easily outperform the Wildcat heads according to reports
from Oz.

Morning Chaps,

I received this email today from Jim about the 36 Rover 14. Perhaps the
list may be able to spread the word about Jim wanting to sell.

After having a good look at the photos it would appear to me that if you
had one it would not take much to put a rover unit back in.

Den.

The conversion to modern drive train was done for a previous owner in
the USA a few years ago. He lived in the Midwest and this was his
solution for long-distance drives to classic car events, though its
obviously not everyone's cup of tea.

It's likely that the original parts are still in the US somewhere,
although for the asking price one could probably buy a very nice
un-modified original 1930's Rover.

I was going to comment on that too Steve.

Certainly one way of making your classic car more "modern" and easier
to use? But in my view takes away from the whole idea of keeping the
old classics on the road.

Here is another way, full restoration. Many of you Roverites in US and
Canada have done business with Scott Richmond, Scott used to own the
car, he sold it a while back, now fully restored and for sale:

I just happen to have some pre restoration photos on our Flickr site

Hi Peter,

Do you know if any records exist, in a museum perhaps, of Rover Distributors Pte Ltd. of South Yarra as seen on the dashboad plate in one of the pictures on eBay? I'm still working on the history of the 14/45 and 16/50 cars and it would help a lot if I could extablish how many of the Colonial versions were imported into Australia.

Regards

Hi Stewart,

I live in Tasmania these days, so do not have access to our Library
records in Melbourne. I will contact our Club Librarian and ask her to
contact you with any information we may have. I doubt it will be
before the new year, RCCA has now broken up for Christmas/New Year
period and first meeting is not until February.

Best wishes
Peter.

Seasons Greetings to All!

There is a cute article and nice picture of my 1970 Rover 3500S on page 16 of the January edition of "Hemmings' Sports and Exotic Cars" magazine.

Unfortunately, some inattentive jerk just backed out of his driveway without looking and struck this beautiful car in the right side front door.

Does anyone have another one of these doors to replace it?

I also need the chrome molding that runs along this door.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Albert

I have several and you are welcome to one but I will have to check to see

it may be high. Also do you need the window frame as well?

Seasons greetings to all from a very chilly UK.

As I type this (10:00 GMT), some 20 miles Northeast of Oxford, there is
bright sunshine, but the temperature is around -3 Celsius (26.6 Farenheit).
There is snow about and regular snowfall in the UK, but main roads in this
area are clear.

Merry Christmas and happy Rovering in 2011

Dear Ben:

My auto body repair man said that he could repair my door, but not the moulding.

I just bought the moulding on eBay, following a tip I received here.

So unless your door is in perfect condition, I will request that he fix my damaged door and restore it to its pre-accident perfect condition, which he says he can do.

That will be expensive, but the guy who hit me is definitely in the wrong, and his insurance company will cheerfully foot the entire bill.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Albert

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all from sunny south Texas. High
yesterday was around 55 F with the first rain we have had in fifty days!
Today (Christmas Day) is bright and clear and should reach the same high
after a chilly evening last night with lots of wind.

I sold my TR8 and am back driving a Rover (first time in several years
that I have had a working Rover to drive every day), though it's only an
'89 Rangie Great Divide Edition. There seems to be more buying and
selling this winter. I have picked up a TR3 which I will pass on and
have been offered an XK140 DHC at an attractive price, which again, will
not be staying. I have three more TR7's but no new Rovers. I keep
looking at all the LHD Rover 75's for sale in Mexico. Nice cars at very
low prices. So near and yet so far...

Roverly,
Kent K.

Hello Rovernetters,

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Christmas Day here in Perth was a warm 40 degrees C, and for Boxing day
today, the forecast is for 38. Some snow would be welcome!

Kind regards,

Hi Peter,

Seasons greeting to you. Its overcast and occassional showers low 20's at
Avoca

Have you seen the 2000 TC (1973) 4D Sedan 4 SP Manual #320634297404 on
ebay?? It is located at Notham in WA. I am interested but inspecting and
shipping WA to Sydney could be prohibitive. Let me know what you think

Cheers Roger Matheson

Hi Roger,

Northam is only an hour's drive from my place so dont worry about
inspecting it myself and Peter can do that for you or the car may even
be known to Rover club here in the West. Dont let the shipping cost
bother you to much as rates are cheaper from west to east. Plus I have a
mate who knows a bloke who has a friend who owns a truck. Nudge nudge
wink wink..

Den.

Hi to all,

Roger Matheson mentioned the Rover 2000 on eBay at #320634297404, so I have
had a look at the photographs of the vehicle, which is located at Northam,
100 km east of Perth.

The reddish-dust in the engine bay and boot/trunk are consistent with the
vehicle having spent time in the Kalgoorlie area, 375 miles / 600 km inland
from Perth and the coast. A plus would be that this area is very dry and
hence cars tend not to have the amount of rust that might be expected in a
car of this age. I make this observation on the basis of having lived in
that area for a decade myself.

The vehicle does look as though a day spent pressure cleaning detailing and
polishing would be well spent.

Roger, if you were seriously interested, I know two Rover club members
people who live just 40 km from Northam and who might be prepared to give
the car a good look over for you. If you write to me off the list I will
send you have their details. They in turn may be able to suggest a qualified
mechanic who could check compressions etc, and/or a club member in Northam
itself. I live in Perth and while I'd happily take up a run to Northam, I
lack the mechanical skills to provide the kind of information you'd require.
Transport to the east may be cheaper as it is frequently classified as a
backload. My understanding is that a higher proportion of road freight is
heading west .

And Den Gallacher had mentioned a joint expedition by the two of us- we'll
see what can be sorted out.

I hope that this information may be of assistance to you.

Kind regards

Peter Mitchell

Albert, if your door can't be repaired to your satisfaction, I have a 2000TC parts car with a good right front door. You experts out there, are there any compatibility issues trying to use a '67 2000 door on a NADA 3500S?

I'm just down the road from you in the Santa Cruz area, so shipping isn't a big issue.

Geoff,
I think Albert's body man said it could be straightened, but for future
reference, there are problems with fitting a 2000TC door to a 3500S NAS.
The side intrusion bar is not fitted to the 2000. The side trim on the
2000TC is located at a slightly different elevation so the trim clip
holes must be moved. But the killer is fitting the window lifts to the
TC door. None of this is impossible, just added difficulty compared to
starting with a fully assembled 3500S NAS door with working lift motor.

Roverly,
Kent K.

Dear Geoff:

Thanks for the offer.

I think my body man can repair my damaged door.

I'll let you know.

I don't think a 2000 door will fit the 3500, but I can drive my TC2000 around to the body man and see what he says.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Albert,

I'm just now catching up on Rovernet, and see your need for a door. I gather it is a passenger side door?

I have a door in very good condition, no rust or dents? a couple of scratches., but the inner components (glass, frame, window motor) have been removed. This would make it much lighter to ship. If you can use it, let me know and I'll send you a picture.

After replacing the output shaft seal on my 70 TC's 4 speed
transmission last summer, I unfortunately still have
leaking from the top of the gearbox. Looks like I will have to have
the box dropped and the selector shaft seals looked at.
For budgeting purposes, does anyone have an educated guess at the cost
of having this job done might be?
Thanks;

Though not advised, this could be done without removing the gearbox. But I'd only let somebody who has done it before try it, if I were paying for it.

The actual repair, once the box was out, would be a couple of hours at most (manual says a hour to adjust the selector shafts). Parts are minimal, the shaft seals and possibly the gasket and rubber plug for the cover that holds the the detent balls & springs in place. The only tricky bit is not damaging the case to bellhousing gasket when you remove the top cover.

Yours
Vern
