you check the pushrod make sure its straight? make sure when you have the engine
running with the valve cover off the see the motion of the pushrods if there all

I made sure the valve was not stuck and that the push rod was straight. I
have not run with cover off and checked for rotation.I'll take a look and

Hi Ben,
Yes we are home now and I've looked up over the barn in search of early P4 bumperettes. The news isn't good. So far I've found one front and one rear, but both dented and with lots of surface rust. Too good to junk, but restoring them would be an act of last resort. It seems there should be more somewhere - at least the mates to them. And one of the cars we tore down wasn't very old at the time and it seems like it's bumperettes would at least have less rust, though perhaps dented. The inner braces would need to be removed to straighten one, then rewelded back in place before plating.
I'd love to give these two away, but am thinking you will most likely cast about for better ones. I'll keep looking. I'm hoping to work with son, Steven, and Dirk Burroughs over sorting and disposition of all my old Rover parts. Storage is getting tenuous and I rather preside over their disposition while I'm still able than inflict it on someone else.

Hi Henry
Thanks for going to all that trouble looking for me, although sometimes when we go hunting we find good parts we forgot we had!!! I'm still looking and do have a couple of leads. I guess we are in the same boat regarding Rover parts. I have P4 doors, bonnets, trunk lids, free wheel trans, engines, rear bumper,seats grills and the list goes on. I have been trying for a few years now to pass it along to someone that could use the parts, but Prince Edward Island is a bit remote. I find it very difficult to even think of scrapping everything. But not getting any younger and after recent quadruple bypass surgery I have slowed down quite a lot. Fortunately my 61 P4 100 is in good nick and only needs regular maintenance (I hope) so I continue to enjoy it.

Hi all, Marie and I have decided to attend the ABFM in Vancouver, B.C. I know it is rather late in the game, but it could not be avioded. There was an e-mail regarding an after the show dinner of the Rover folks with a limited number of reservations. I need to contact somone regarding attending this function. Ben,I replied to this thread before but it got lost perhaps....anyways I am in Moncton and sent you a letter about 30 years ago(I still have it!) looking for Rover parts for my '59 p4 rover 90. I put the car in a barn back then?and recent events have me starting restoration finally and my jouney has been charted here at the U.K. Rover site where there is lots of info and posts by me:

If you follow my posts,you will see I have been working on interior and front grill so far. My p4 is one of 66 of those imported to Canada that year and I have even located the original owner. If you have p4 parts,that is of interest to me, but at the moment, it is a low budget start with hopes to accomplish a lot with extra time. Hello everyone.
For all who are attending the May 21st Van Dusen ABFM in Vancouver
(and for all who are not going to the ABFM, but want to meet with us
afterwards), we are having a no-host dinner at the White Spot
Restaurant, 2518 West Broadway (at Larch), Vancouver. Phone
604-731-3034.
We have the heated, glassed, outside patio reserved from 6:00 p.m.
The reservation is for between 25 and 30 people (30 is the max. the
patio is licensed for).
In addition, we've asked for space to be reserved at the patio end of
the parking lot (west end of the parking lot for those bringing their
Rovers) so all the Rovers can be parked together. No idea at this
time if the restaurant will agree. However, they have OK'd us putting
up a few banners on the outside windows of the patio.
It would help if you would let me know by reply email if you will be
attending the dinner and how many.
Maps with route from Van Dusen to the restaurant will be issued at
Van Dusen, or emailed to you if you are attending dinner but not
coming to the ABFM.

We took apart a 1956 "60" a few years ago, I don't recall if it had
over-riders, but I can check about the middle of this month and let you

I pulled the valve covers and marked all the push rods . All turn,some
faster than others; but they all turn. The one that broke is one of the

Nick, I missed the thread at the start. Did you break a rocker arm? What
cam are you running? You need steel rockers as the aluminium ones either
break or wear through at the pushrod seat.

Take a look at, and run a finger over the inside of bearing surface the rocker arms; over time these surfaces tend to collect engine debris from the oil which embeds itself in the bearing surface of the arm and this works just like a grinding paste on the shafts; if so, I rather suspect you will also have noticeable wear in the steel rocker shafts where the arms run
I'd really suggest a complete new set of rockers and shafts as the only worthwhile fix - anything else will most probably be temporary

You may want to disassemble the rocker arm shafts. I had 5 bent/broken
pushrods turn up on one of these V-8's, partly due to a heavily-sludged
motor producing something like glue -- which caused the pushrods to stick in
their guides (sprayed everything with penetrating oil and then broke them
loose with a piece of wood and a mallet after removing the rocker arm
assemblies). The rocker arm assemblies were also full of sludge and some of
the rocker arms were sticking, took quite a while to clean the oil passages
properly. They're not that hard to disassemble (perhaps this was done
during your rebuild project, but if not...), just be sure to keep everything
in correct order for reassembly. After very carefully cleaning the heads in
place with a small screwdriver and Q-tips (as well as the valley, covering
the center so that stuff didn't fall further in) and replacing the damaged
pushrods, the engine ran fine -- no further problems, at least in this area.
The fuel system is another story. When these cars sit around for years, all
sorts of things happen!
Hint: Victoria British's TR-8 catalog has the best price I've seen on
pushrods (2.95/ea.) -- they're made in India, seem quite acceptable.

I remember many years ago repairing a friends land rover 110 V8 with exactly
the same problem, a broken pushrod. Dropping the sump and retrieving the
broken end and replacing the pushrod worked fine. In that car's case it had
been stolen and recovered. Presumablby for a ram raid. My theory was that
the engine had been over revved and it had thrown the pushrod. It may well
have saved the Landy from ending it's life driven through the front of an
electronics store.

shop trying to rebuild it. They suggest that I replace my voltage
regulator, which makes sense. I've read, both on the P5 forum and at Moss
Motors' site, that voltage regulators need to be carefully cleaned and
adjusted before installation, a delicate enough process that Moss sells
pre-adjusted ones. My confusion stems from some people knowing nothing of
this requirement, and Moss's recommendation of settings different from those
recommended by Rover.

No clue about the voltage regulator but I think I have a spare dynamo
unless I have already sent it to you. It is pretty unique because of the
power steering setup on the back. Do you need another?

Gordon,
I love Moss as much as the next guy, but I think that they aren't really
much of an authority when it comes to Rovers, and I am fairly certain
that the regulator isn't shared with other cars Moss handles (or am I
wrong about that?).
Does the workshop manual cover the adjustment procedure? I'd use that
method, if possible. That, or contact a particularly knowledgeable
British car mechanic in your area (and who you use for service) and ask
about the subject. In my area I'd ask David at Sports Car Services, and
I presume you have someone down your way?
Eric at Bits4Brits.net might be able to provide some expertise, and he
is a great source for electrical bits that can improve your car, such as
relays for the headlights and the horns.

Tom, according to my old Lucas catalogs, the P5 shares the VR with the AH
3000, various Triumphs. I guess I got intimidated by PhilNottingham's
warnings about the precision of the necessary adjustments in the P5 forum.
Pierre says he has a Lucas one ready to go, so I'll probably do that.

A generator generates constantly until the points in the voltage regulator
open and break the charging circuit. Occasionally people open these up and
clean the points in them. Like ignition points, the metal contacts fry
after a while. If the points weld themselves together, the generator would
charge constantly, overheat and ruin itself.
Regulators are adjustable. However this is done "at the factory", at
least to start off with. Without the regulator connected to a meter to see
how it reacts to a generator's current passing through it, you do not know
what adjustments to make. This can be done at a competent auto electrical
shop.
Replacement parts are available, ie. new regulator and replacement
rebuildable or new old stock generator. I may even have most of them if you
provide me with the Lucas part numbers off each item and the year and model
of your car. If I am not mistaken, your generator has the power steering
pump attached to the end opposite the drive pulley?

There are 3 sets of points in a Lucas RB340.
Cutin, Voltage, Current.
Generally the adjustment that matters most is the Voltage. If it is low the
battery does not charge fully. If it is too high the battery boils dry.

The alloy rocker arms are not as strong as the steel ones fitted to the P6B. I broke one on my old 3.5 SD1 - mileage/fatigue related more than anything. Replaced it with one off a Discovery and it went for years without further trouble.

Even the used ones it is best to rebuild. These square motorswere used in
1969-73 Jaguar XJ6, and GM cars of the era. Later all changed to round
motors. Any window motor rebuilder can do them; but usually they need your
core. They usually give a one year guarantee. LF and RR are the same;
believed marked L. RF and LR are the same, believed marked R. James Dean,

Anyone ( really) need a SD1 Sunroof actuator- the White plastic
piece, part of the sunroof linkage? It becomes brittle and breaks
after 30 years or so. I had a couple made out of Aluminum, through the

I would like to publicly thank Kent Kinard here for furnishing me a replacement motor for an electric window on my Rover 3500S on very short notice.
I had told him that the need for urgency was because the car was entered in the Sonoma-Marin (California) Concours d'Elegance a few days hence and the judges always request entrants to raise and lower their windows, (inter alia.)
He hastened to find two replacement motors for me from his legendary stock of spares and sent it via UPS. I got it in time to be installed for the show.
(Predictably, the judges this year did not ask for the windows to be raised or lowered).
Kent also recently sent me a bumper overrider pad at my request when mine was damaged in a rear-end collision.
He is a splendid fellow and a shining exemplar of what it means to be a true member of our Club.

I would like to publicly thank Kent Kinard here for furnishing me a replacement motor for an electric window on my Rover 3500S on very short notice.
I had told him that the need for urgency was because the car was entered in the Sonoma-Marin (California) Concours d'Elegance a few days hence and the judges always request entrants to raise and lower their windows, (inter alia.)
He hastened to find two replacement motors for me from his legendary stock of spares and sent it via UPS. I got it in time to be installed for the show.
(Predictably, the judges this year did not ask for the windows to be raised or lowered).
Kent also recently sent me a bumper overrider pad at my request when mine was damaged in a rear-end collision.
He is a splendid fellow and a shining exemplar of what it means to be a true member of our Club.

OK sounds good. I am glad that you got your gas pedal together again.
The plastic area that bends, I hesitate to call it a hinge, breaks on these
often. A real hinge can be added easily.

Albert and Gianluca, thank you both for your kind words. I must hasten
to add that I, myself, would be dead in the water on several projects
were it not for Dirk, Steve, Garrett, Ruth, Dermot, Pierre and the rest
of you. You are all a joy to behold. We are a team that works
remarkably well and we in the Rovernet are indeed friends.
For those looking for parts, particularly P6 items, you will almost
always get faster and more dependable service from those who make their
living from sales and service and I encourage you to support them. They
are real heroes in my book. I am not in the parts business, I just
happen to have this stuff. My parts are not inventoried and
availability depends more on my remembering where I saw something last.
Until I retire, I am only at the shop one or two days per week. The way
the economy is, I may never get to retire.
I'll see many of you at Fitchburg in a couple of weeks.

He attached one end of an ordinary hinge to the base of the pedal and screwed in the other end into the floorboard.

Hi Tom,
Ordinarily I would recommend getting the cylinders sleeved in brass or
stainless and rebuilding them with a seal kit. Assuming you may be
trying to replace your wheel cylinders before RA11, you won't have
enough lead time to get them sleeved.
If that's the case, then contact me off-line -- I may be able to help,
especially if you plan to drop by Dirk's shop in Fitchburg this weekend
as I heard you might be...

Well, ordinarily, they would be in a box on their way to White Post, but
I am 3,152 miles away from my car right now, so removing them would
prove a bit challenging, shall we say! ;-)
Both cylinders have the upper piston seized, and while I might be able
to break them free, hone, and kit them, there's a good chance at least
one would leak.
I'd love to have the car back for RA, but it doesn't look good right now.

Well, I do plan on making it down at some point, but I'm not quite
certain when I might be able to make that happen. Is there a specific

I'll be at Dirk's tomorrow and Dirk and others will be there both days
-- working on cars and generally getting ready for RA11.
We should be able to find some cylinder cores to send out for sleeving
or some other solution.

I think you' re right, it looks safroon.
I' ve been in NZ in oct - nov 2001, seen one or two, but in my opinion this colour is very rare.
During my travel I visited the town of Cromwell, where I met an old man who had a red 3500 S, repainted, who had done his military service during WWII and made the campaign of Italy till Udine, my hometown, and then went on in Austria till Spittal, which is more or less 150 km far from my home.
On the other side of the pond another P6 fan who had visited my hometown during the war!
