Hi Folks
I have just returned from a ten day trip around Newfoundland, and naturally I searched for Rovers. I spotted several Landies most appeared to be in daily use. My one rare find was a 1957 Rover 105R, sadly this car is beyond help, but has lots of good parts. I now have a complete slid in tool drawer. The owner said he drove the car in to where I found it, the engine ran smoothly and the Roverdrive Trans seemed to work fine. I was tempted to make an offer for the whole car, but its in such a remote part of Province the cost of getting it out would be prohibitive. Nevertheless, it was an exciting find and I can maybe go back sometime later for more parts. Didn't come across too much else of interest, a hard top TR7 and an airport Karrier truck (Rootes Group) with stairs for loading and unloading passengers. Time now to take my Rover for a drive with her re-chromed front overriders!!!once I install them!
                             Cheers Ben (irishrover)

Hello Ben and Rovernet,
Good on you all!! Newfoundland is a facinating place. My mother's
parents, my grandparents, are both from there. They left the southeast
corner, near St. John's in the 1930s and emigrated to the Boston area in
the USA. My grandfather worked in the ocean fishing industry, both under
sail and under power.
He resettled in Boston and worked out of Boston and Gloucester, either
as a harbor pilot or on various fishing boats, between the 40s and the late
60s, when he retired.
I was able to visit Newfoundland's west coast, and the Labrador coast,
in the mid 90s, while I was giving a group of college students a guided
tour. We visited some of the more signifigant Native North American sites
there. We also visited North America's only verified NORSE occupied site,
now a reconstructed village museum, and a World Heritage Site. Hint Hint,
Rovers,,,Viking ships, norse helmets, etc!!!!! This is called L'Anse Aux
Medows. It is well worth visiting, or looking for some video or info about
it on line too!
Think Newfoundland!!!

I forgot to mention in my earlier note that I made a second trip to
Labrador, a short time after my first when I was directing the college
field trip. It was 1993 and I had just purchased my 1970 Rover 3500s, that
I still have today. I had not restored the car yet, when I made this
trip. Reverse did not work in the automatic transmission, but that did not
stop me!! I drove all the way to Labrador and back without reverse!! I
was visiting a lady that I had met up there. Parking on the ferries was a
challenge! When I returned home, I converted my car to have a 5 speed SD1
transmission and the rest is history!!
Happy Rovering,

Cheap and beautiful occasionally go together, but not very often! ;-)

Bear in mind that this particular car was listed by a Las Vegas auto repair
shop as a "mechanic's special."

The photos posted with the Craigslist ad weren't very good, apparently
didn't do it justice.

>From what I've seen (also via Martin), it turned out to be much better than
one would have expected, clean & rust-free.

Still, the asking price was fairly typical for a model that's largely
unknown in this country.

Probably something which has come up before, but for those who might have missed it The Bank Job (2008, British crime film w/Jason Statham and a smokin' Saffron Burrows) is set in 1971 London. It's a pretty good flick, full of all sorts of period cars, and I think I counted at least 5 if not 6 P6s. Give it a look, it's a hoot.

I was just informed by Rovers North that they consider the inlet
manifold gasket for the NADA 2.6 Land Rover Engines to be NLA.

Does anyone know of another North American source of these?

Tom,

Ruth at ABC or Dermott Harvey in NY are possibilities. If someone did a
valve job and "decarbonization", this gasket might be left over from a
full head set.

JRW and JWearing in the UK are options too.

The Weslake head engine is quite an orphan in the Land Rover world since
it was only in 1967 North American LR's and many of these have been
swapped for other engines. The same basic short block though was used
in some Land Rovers until 1980-ish using the P4 100 / 95 head.

Should have mentioned Pierre Janusz in the UK too -- he has a complete
head set on ebay UK, but may well have individual gaskets.

Hello Rovernet,
I have not totally researched this, but DAP Rover parts in Springfield
Vermont may have them. They specialize in selling parts for all ages of
Land Rovers. I often buy Series 2 and 3 aged parts from them.
Also, I have several new old stock 3 litre head gasket sets. Does anyone
know if a 3.0 and a 2.6 are similar? They both have one carb.
Rover onward!!!

Hi Garret,

All 6 cylinder engines with the Weslake head use the same head gasket set:

1967 NADA Land Rover 2.6, 1962 - '64 P4 110 2.6, and 1962 - '67 Mk II
and III 3 litre.

Thanks for the information, folks, I will follow up with the various North American options.

As for the various engines, this is what I understand, after researching a bit this afternoon. Hopefully anyone better informed than I will correct any errors:

1.) Early 2.6L - 5 main bearings. Used in the P4 (except the 100 and 110), Land Rover (Not NADA).
2.) 3.0 L - 7 Main Bearings. Used in the P5 3-Litre Sedans
3.) Later 2.6L - 7 Main bearings & Weslake head. A De-stroked version of the 3.0L engine. As such parts other than the crank should be shared. Used in some P5s (Export markets), P4 100 & 110, and the NADA Land Rover 109.

I believe (and I'm counting on those who know from experience to confirm/refute this) that any 2.6 with the Weslake head is the 7-main engine derived from the 3.0 and any with the non-Weslake head is the earlier 5-main engine. This makes some sense, as the bore spacing changed to accommodate the bearings, so the heads wouldn't be interchangeable (except, of course, the earlier non-Weslake 3.0 head...). Perhaps all 5-main have non-Weslake heads and only some 7-main have Weslake?

I'm not 100% certain about the P4 100 having the later 2.6. Wikipedia seems to contain some errors about this, including an implication that the P4 95 had the same engine as the 110, except with a different head (it is my understanding that it used the earlier 5-main bearing engine).

Tom--

Almost right; the earlier 5-main 2.6 engine was used in 90's and 105's
up through 1959. After that all 2.6 and 3.0 engines were based the
7-main block:

100's, 95's, MkI 3-litres and European 6-cylinder Land Rovers had the
pre-Weslake head. The Weslake head will fit on these engines (but see
oil port comment below), but the steering box is in the way on RHD Land
Rovers.

110's, MkII/III 3 litres and 1967 NADA Land Rovers had the Weslake head.

There are some other variations: an additional oil port and O-ring was
added at a rear corner of the head and block around 1965, and the rear
main bearing and seal changed at some point (different diameter?). MkII
3-litres had one crankshaft for automatic and another for manual
gearbox, then the manual type became standard for both MkIII gearboxes.

Not 5 main bearings, but 4. Seven main sixes are 100 and 95 (both with
integral intake manifold) and 110 which is a short stroke 3litre. 100
and 95 are very similar but not identical. 95 used different pistons and
different (thicker head gasket) which it shared with the 110, different
crank pulley.
> 2.) 3.0 L - 7 Main Bearings. Used in the P5 3-Litre Sedans
>
Three versions-
1) Mk. I and IA with integral intake like P4 100 and 95,
2) early MK II(a & b) without oil drainbroack hole ,
3) late MK II (c) and all Mk. III with oil drainback hole in deck
surface and larger main journals on crankshaft. Rocker gear differs with
early 100 engines sharing rocker gear with MK I 3litre, while late 100
and all 110 share rocker gear with the Weslake head engines.
> 3.) Later 2.6L - 7 Main bearings& Weslake head. A De-stroked version of the 3.0L engine. As such parts other than the crank should be shared. Used in some P5s (Export markets), P4 100& 110, and the NADA Land Rover 109.
>
I do not believe the 2.6 used in the NADA 109 (1967 only) would have
used the same head and head gasket as the P4 110 as the oil drainback
passage from the head should have been incorporated in all blocks and
heads cast after March 1964, although I have seen print references to
the NADA 109 using "the engine from the P4 110."
> I believe (and I'm counting on those who know from experience to confirm/refute this) that any 2.6 with the Weslake head is the 7-main engine derived from the 3.0 and any with the non-Weslake head is the earlier 5-main engine. >
Non-Weslake heads from 4 main and 7 main engines will not interchange
because of bore spacing. Some 7 main heads ('59 through early '64) can
be interchanged if both upper and lower rockers and pushrods are used
that match the heads. It may be possible to interchange early and late
Weslake heads, but I don't think so. I've never tried it and although I
have had both early and late Weslakes, I have never had them at the same
time. My guess is that such a swap would invite a massive oil leak.
> I'm not 100% certain about the P4 100 having the later 2.6. Wikipedia seems to contain some errors about this, including an implication that the P4 95 had the same engine as the 110, except with a different head (it is my understanding that it used the earlier 5-main bearing engine).
>
As noted above, the 95 and 110 are basically the same except for the
head. All 100's have the seven main block. Some late 100's used some 95
engine parts (I know that's vague...but it's late and I'm tired).

Anybody else want to take a shot at this one.

Kent K.

If you own a Rover and can't make a gasket, you shouldn't own a rover. Get
some 1mm gasket paper and a ball peen hammer. Suggest tacking it in place.

Sounds like an intermittent short or open in the low tension circuit. Check the lead from the distributor connector to the points under the cap.

Hmm,

I agree with Vern and the clue is the tacho jumping suggesting an
intermitent fault in the low tension circuit. Have you checked the
insulation where the spring of the points mounts to a peg on the base plate.
There are typically plastic sleaves on this peg to prevent a short to earth
so that the current from the coil goes through the points (and condensor).
You could then diagnose further by hot wiring. That is put a lead from the
battery (or from a connection to the head lights which is not far away in
the engine bay) straight to the coil thereby eliminating all the ignition
wiring loom and the ignition switch in particular. If the hot wire works
then suspect a worn ingnition switch and with the engine running wiggle the
key around and see if you can replicate the problem. If it is the ignition
switch then devote many hours to removal renovate and re assemble. Let us
know how it goes.

Cheers Roger

Hi Folks
I wonder if anyone had this problem and found a solution. When I drive my 1961 P4-100 with the windows shut I have no problems, if I have the windows open, even just one vent window I get fumes inside the car. I'm thinking I should lengthen the tail pipe as it doesn't quite reach out from under the rear bumper. Appreciate any advice.

Chech to make sure you don't have a crack in the exhaust manifold. I had one
that only could be seen when it was hot and also chech the intire exhaust
system.

Mine had me fooled with a small crack that you could not notice unless the
engine was hot. Also check to make sure that the exhaust manifold is tight
to the block and that the gaskets are not leaking. There is another source
and that is fron the valve cover vent and you may have a bit too much blow
by due to ring ware. That can come up to the heater/vent intake at the end
of the bonnet and when you crack a window the interior goes negative in
pressure and pulls the fumes in. If your fan is in good shape you might be
able to counter with it on full balst.

Hi Ben
No leaks in the system, I even tried plugging any small holes I
found thru the firewall.

Hi Ben, I would check the trunk seals to see if it's drawing in the fumes. I've had vehicles that I was certain were trying to kill me and have often thought of using a smoke bomb in the exhaust to find the leak. Light it, place in exhaust and plug the tail pipe and look for the leak.

Hi All

Does anyone have a source for 2000 TC air filter cartridges. No luck in Oz to date. Alternatively has anyone had success in cleaning them. I typically use compressed air to blow out the dust etc but the paper remains stained (and possibly partially blocked) With old filters I experimented with petrol and compressed air but that did not seem to make much difference.

Hi Roger,

 Have you looked at http://www.roverclub.ca/partsXref.html?

Failing any matches - I notice the Ryco air filter is not listed on their on
line catalogue, is there a foam sports air filter that would fit?

Mike

Be careful with the oval type filter which does both carbs. You may find that there is a ridge in the housing which will mean that the filter will not seal, and allow unfiltered air through. You may be able to seal with some silicone sealant to make it work.

I bought some TC filters a few years ago from Vanguard Triumph spares in Melbourne.

There is a lawn Tractor filter which fits pretty well.

here is a link to the Fram catalog which includes competitor cross reference:

There are listed on ebay.com.au:

A Subaru Leone filter will do but it's rather too thick to fit comfortably in the filter box. There's also reputed to be a tractor filter that will fit as well.
Worst case you could park up the filter box and make up a pro tem arrangement with two sheets of aluminum to sandwich a suitably sized oval single filter - cutting holes in the inner sheet for the carb inlets and two small holes in the outer for the mounting bolts. A couple of lengths of wire [or long cable ties] would then hold the outer two ends of the sandwich snug with the filter to prevent air leakage.
Scott's Old Rubber in Australia has a replacement filter in its catalog which I assume is the aforesaid tractor item.

You have an exhaust leak somewhere. P4's never draw in stack gas with the windows open or closed. My bet would be that it is at the front end of the system.

When I drive my 1961 P4-100 with the windows shut I have no problems, if I have the windows open, even just one vent window I get fumes inside the car. I'm thinking I should lengthen the tail pipe as it doesn't quite reach out from under the rear bumper. Appreciate any advice.

Hi all,

Anyone found a good crossover available in the US for rear shocks for a 3500s? Time to stop the boat from rocking...

Thanks,

Peter
