Quite right, Peter. 

My father had a weathershield fitted to his 1956 Rover
90 when new by Grenville Motors (the dealer) in
Sydney, I believe. It comes from the days when
handsignals rather than trafficators or flashers were
the norm. The driver could leave his window open so he
could stick his arm out for turn and stop signals
without the inside of the car being soaked when
raining. They were partially successful in that role
and extremely noisy at country highway speeds.
