[ROVERNET - UK] Electrical mystery continued

I had the pillar in the vice and thumped it in...
Removal was via extractor that works as per the workshop manual, works well.
I pulled it out 3 times looking for dags etc, couldn't find any.
I can only just see the top of the groove once it stops going in.

Did you really clean the snap ring groove well? I've had that cause 
problems inserting the snap ring. If that's not it, perhaps a burr in 
the socket is standing proud. Can you get the joint back out without 
damaging it?
