[ROVERNET - UK] Vanguard models

Hi all,

I noticed the post regarding Rover models. Yes, Vanguard does have a
variety of very nice Rover models.
Including P4, P5, P6 and the SDI models. The P6 there are at least 6
varieties including police versions.
The show up all the time on eBay BUT you should not buy them there. I did
and found that I could buy them new
from a Vanguard model supplier at about half the cost. I have everyone I
could find. They are very nice!

The adventure continues!!!!
Dirk

Members who have access to the BBC4 digital TV channel may be interested to
note the show scheduled for 21:05 pm on Sunday 30 October.

Programme details as shown on the BBC web site are as follows:

Rover, the Long Goodbye: Time Shift

During its heyday, the Rover brand stood for prestige in the motoring
world, and the company with a string of successful models was envied by
manufacturers around the globe. But the last two decades has seen a gradual
slump, culminating in the sale of the firm by BMW for a nominal #10, and
then the closure of Longbridge as a mass manufacturing site.

Motoring nostalgists will delight in re-living classic cars such as the P5
and the P6 of the 1950s and 1960s respectively, before the British Leyland
era and joint ventures with other firms.

Contributors remembering the classics and the clangers include Quentin
Willson, Zog Zeigler, Jonathan Glancey and Stephen Bayley.

Narrated by Geoffrey Palmer.

Rovernetters,

I have been working on both my 2000TC and my 3500S and want to get the
icelert systems functioning. I dismantled one unit last night and found
that the sensing transistor's wires had become disconnected. I found a
wiring diagram on the net from the original manufacturer, Findley, Irvine
LTD. They are still in business but looking at their website leads me to
believe they are not dealing with Rover Icelerts anymore. My question is
does anyone provide a rebuilding service for these units or am I going to
have to figure out how to and then refurbish this unit on my own?

John, I have four or five extra icelerts, if you need one.

I have icealerts both round and square available, contact me
jaguru at bellsouth.net I will put them on my eBay store (Old English Motor
Company), on the Rover section. How should I test them? They probably are
not worn out from over-use. James Dean, Ft.Lauderdale.

John,
I published some diagrams here:
http://www.roverclub.ca/icealertindex.html

The sensors will burn out in a nano-second if the main
wires are connected incorrectly. The components of
the early and late type are the same but have been
assembled in a different way to upgrade the ice alert
to a more robust head in the later model. The early
case was more prone to corrosion and the electronics
were more exposed in the round type of sensor. They
encapsulated the electronics for the rectangular head
and used a stainless steel body. However, they used
mild steel for the two support pillars. The screws
and pillars rust and it makes screw removal difficult.
You could probably make up one good unit if you had a
variety of case parts and the facility to unsolder and
resolder the transistors and other components. You
might start off with just replacing the heat sensing
transistor that is exposed to the elements.

Years ago, I talked with a very co-operative gentleman
from Findley-Irvine who sent along a diagram from
which I generated more usable diagrams for myself. I
posted the ones I used on the club website. I figured
out how to test the early sensors on my car with the
late electronics. I used engine start Ether to cool
the transistor to get the orange light flashing on the
dash. There is even a special spray you can buy to
cool electronic components for testing.

It would be easier to take Peter up on his offer ;-)

Eric

The Vanguards models are superb. They have many varieties of P4, P5, and
P6 models. I haven't kept up to date so they might have an SD1 by now -
does anyone know? These are built 1/43 models, not kits, but they are
inexpensive and it you wanted to customize one you wouldn't be butchering
an expensive handbuilt model.

Further to Yves post, I agree the photos aren't the
best but having seen the model 'in the flesh' so to
speak they are pretty decent, but I guess its a case
of each to their own!

Happy Rovering all

Hello all

Can any one advise what I can use to clean the rust
from water passages in my cylinder head? I have had
the radiator "rodded out" The rad. shop said it was
very dirty. I cleaned out the block which was also
very dirty [heavily rusted] with muriatic acid. I
cleaned the head with a strong alcaline degreaser but
in didn't touch the rust.
Thank you in advance.
David

Hi Geoff,
Yes they are,and Yes they do - there are Police ,Vitesse, and SE and the
recent 75(plus the MG Version) as well as P6,6b police and Monte
rally, and of course P5 (Mk11) and P4 ( Police and a Round the World in
80 days P4 80).They are remarkably well detailed ,accurate ,nice looking
and well priced. Many of the Hand built Specialist(hugely overpriced)
models are poor in all thes areas.Oh yes there is a current Range Rover
and Land Rovers also from Vanguard / Corgi.

regards
Ken Watkin
