[ROVERNET - UK] Headrests again

Hi all,

I could not help but weigh in on the headrest discussions.
So this is what I think I know.

The ET style headrests began with the P5 and carried over to the P5b and P6
series. It appears to have died off around 67 or 68 for the P6 in favor of
the teardrop style. However the ET style did seem to carry right through
until the end of the P5B production that ended in 1972.

As far as I know the lighting integrated in the ET style headrests was
limited to the P5/P5B models and it looks like it was a dealer option
or an upgrade version. In fact it may have only been offered in the P5B
model I am not sure about this. I have been keeping track of the ET style on
EBay UK looking for Red with the lights for my P5.

If I have this wrong someone please correct me

I would be interested in rear headrests for my 68 P6 so Glen if you decide
to part with them let me know.

Hope everyone is well

Dirk

Hi,

I have a set of P6 rear headrests. They are the ones that set on top of
the back seat under the rear window. They are the off-white color like
that used in the Federal 3500S and 2000 vinyl interiors. Anyone know
what the story is on these? How rare are they? When were they produced?
What would they have cost as a new option? These seem to be vinyl or
Ambla and don't look like they would have come with a leather interior.
What cars would they be correct for? Last time I saw any on eBay, I
think they went for around $75. Anybody remember?

I also have a set of ET front headrests in buffalo (dark brown) that I
believe came out of a TC. There are no reading lights in them for rear
passengers. What vintage would these be? I think they came in the '67-68
TC that I sold to Norm. The original interior of that car was dark
brown, but all of the stitching had disintegrated and the leather was
shot. Anyone have a need for these?

I've got a line on a '67 2000TC in the USA that I haven't been able to
get to see yet because the seller has health problems. I was going to go
without Rovers for a while, but I am tempted because it is supposed to
be a nice original car. It is supposed to be blue with a white interior.
I am guessing that it is Zircon Blue with a white leather inetrior based
on what I have heard.

At the P6 Drivers Club site http://www.p6club.com/ there is a 1967
2000 Automatic listed for sale. I've never seen a Rover in the USA with
such a bright white interior, but all of the off-white interiors I've
seen have been later cars in vinyl or Ambla. Is this what the white
leather interiors looked like in cars exported to the States, or has
this one been recolored? It looks pretty original.

Glen

The rear headrests were offered very early on. But I have never seen
any 67 or earlier car with them here in Canada (that could reasonably
be considered original equipment, that is) They did come trimmed in
leather, my set are leather faced.

I would think the buffalo coloured front headrests would be
reasonably desireable, that is a fairly rare interior colour I think.

I assumed the ET headrests ended about 68, but am not sure. Every one I had
had no reading lamps. I have a set of nice later , forward leaning style,
the same color. They will interchange.I am not sure if either is better; but

I was rearended about 25 years ago, driving a 2000TC with ET headrests. I
was stopped at a light, and a lady out celerating her birthday rearended me,

doing about 40 MPH. . The rear of th rover looked terrible, the front
seatbolts ripped out, and the seat tipped back to the back seat.I was
wearing a seatbelt, and was not affected.Naturally, her insurance company
was very anxious to settle with me, and have me sign a release.I think I
accepted about $1500, which seemed a lot back then, unbolted all the bad
panels, and bolted on good panels the same color, and fixed it in a few
hours.I think I had to bang out the base about a half inch, by the bootlid.I

certainly will vouch for the ET headrests, and Ralph Nader's statement in
"Unsafe at any Speed, about the P6,that"All Cars should be built like this"
James Dean, Ft. Lauderdale.

Do the ET headrests have a flat bar for their mounting?

Thanks, Nick! ;-)

I used to be fluent in all my P6 interior and exterior colors, but I was
permanently messed up when I went to recolor an orangey interior. Okay,
Sandalwood (Toledo Red, Sandalwood, Ebony, Buckskin, Buffalo)? I went to
the Eastwood factory store and they had spray-on vinyl upholstery colors
and the one they called Buckskin was a perfect match for what Rover
called Sandalwood. I haven't been able to keep them straight since. I
also have a pair of deerskin gloves (often called buckskin over here)
that are a similar orange color. I finally got to the point where I just
referred to the two colors as off-white and orangey.

I used to jump all over people for incorrect Rover terminology, before I
hit 50 and mellowed out. A few years ago, there were people on the list
who insisted on calling any form of 3500S a Rover P6BS. This used to
drive me crazy because there already was a Rover sports prototype that
the company called the P6BS, but no one would listen to me. I haven't
seen it now for years, so maybe it has died off. (Please don't start it
up again because I have a very fragile psyche...)

But is the dark interior ebony or buffalo? My TC has a dark interior.
Ahh the BS coupe, killed by Leyland as their first gift to Rover...
