I back Paul on this one.
The "standard" twist and lock rover compressors depend on the integrity of the 
now 30+ year old steel cups at either end, and the amount of surface used to 
get "grip" is very small considering the huge tension involved.
It is far safer to remove the mudguard and wheel and use the more common 
external type.  It is a little more complicated - however the mudguards just 
bolt on and off and it also provides way better access for any other work 
needed at the time.
