Here in italy we use to say: 
La rolls royce è la rover dell' uomo ricco.
It' s exactly the same.

But wasn't it an english idiom?

Rricordiamoci che in Inghilterra circola da sempre questa frase:" la Rolls Royce è la Rover dell'uomo ricco"

Ian Glass unfortunately can not get on to the Rovernet but emailed me to say 
he had a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, of which he describes as the worst car 
,bar none he has ever owned with a constant myriad of problems..........His 
P4 Rover in the meantime has yet to fail him after 27 years ownership and 
when he finally disposed of his Rolls Royce the garage that took it 
commented the RR should stand for Richman's Rover
