Good one, Gavin.
My air valve experience developed as a sticking
mini-piston.  That was caused by a light film of rust.

The symptom was that the rear brakes held on when the
pedal was depressed.  I isolated the problem to the
rear brake servo (my version had twin servos).  Then I
isolated the problem to the air valve by pulling the
vacumn line off the servo tank, etc., etc., etc.
